HealthNet Mission
Quality health information lies at the heart of a healthy community. HealthNet links Connecticut’s patients, caregivers, and residents to information they can rely on to improve conversations with their physicians and make informed decisions about their medical care.
Services
HealthNet is an outreach service of the UConn Health, Lyman Maynard Stowe Library. Our staff of medical librarians provide the following free services to Connecticut residents:
- Confidential, personalized research on health and wellness topics.
- Training for the public on how to use the Internet for health research.
- Education for health care providers, librarians and other professionals on how to direct patients, students, and consumers to reliable health information on the Internet.
- One-on-one training sessions on how to use the Stowe Library’s resources to answer medical questions.
About Us
HealthNet began in 1985 as an outreach program for public libraries. Our goal then was to help local public libraries become primary access points for consumer health information. We assisted librarians in building health collections, and trained them in how to conduct medical reference interviews. We encouraged librarians to refer customers with complex medical questions to HealthNet for answers.
Today’s medical information environment is a vastly different place. Ready access to the internet enables public and school librarians to easily guide their customers to reliable websites for conducting health research. We still encourage librarians to direct patient’s with complex medical questions to HealthNet. We also partner with health professionals to guide their patients to reliable health information resources. And we provide health research services for patients, their caregivers, and vulnerable state residents to help them achieve better health outcomes.
