WEB WATCHER:
NUTRITION and FOOD SCIENCE
by Kathleen Crea, MLS, 6th Year, AHIP
Information & Education Services Librarian

The Internet offers a variety of useful, free tools for nutritionists or those studying the science of food production as well as anyone interested in healthy eating. There is much more to nutrition and food science besides scientific analysis and the food pyramid! Following is a brief list of recommended sites for both health professionals and consumers. If I've left out some important information sources, please email me, at crea@nso.uchc.edu. Bon appetit!

· The U.S. Department of Agriculture sponsors the "Food and Nutrition Information Center" (FNIC) at http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/ This wide-ranging site offers current recommended dietary guidelines, analysis of standard food portions and general nutritional advice.

· U.S. Government's gateway nutrition site - targeted for both consumers and health professionals - can be viewed from: http://www.nutrition.gov/

· Tufts University offers a Ratings Guide to Nutritional Websites, via "Nutrition Navigator" at: http://navigator.tufts.edu/

· Check out just how many grams of fat are in that cheese Danish using USDA's Nutrient Database for Standard Reference Values, at: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/cgi-bin/nut_search.pl

· The Food Safety Site at http://www.foodsafety.gov/

· Center for Science in the Public Interest, at: http://www.cspinet.org/ covers many topics for public health including advice for Americans on diet and food safety.

· The IBIDS Database (International Bibliographic Information on Dietary Supplements) provides access to citations in peer-reviewed scholarly journals for professionals (and a consumer-oriented point link as well). Produced by the NIH, IBIDS is at: http://ods.od.nih.gov/databases/ibids.html

· Several databases with nutrition or food science information are available via our links with UCONN-Storrs library, including AGRICOLA, AGRIC International, Biological & Agricultural Index, Health and Wellness Research Center (subscription databases available for UCONN users only). Go to the Storrs D-Compass site and enter a keyword search for "food science" or "nutrition" from: http://norman.lib.uconn.edu/NewSpirit/Databases/

· NAT: Nutritional Analysis Tool is a free site sponsored by researchers associated with University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign which allows you to analyze the nutrient content of your diet, online. Visit NAT at: http://www.nat.uiuc.edu/

· Finally... need a recipe and how-to-instructions to make your first batch of Dim Sum? Need some great new recipes for that New Years Eve party you're planning? Visit the ultimate "foodies" website -- Epicurious -- at http://eat.epicurious.com/siteindex/index.ssf/?/siteindex/siteindex.html
