Health Data Retrieval Tools: CDC WONDER

Health data are getting increasingly important as more and more raw data are being published electronically. Effective data retrieval is, therefore, a prerequisite for effective use of health data. An awareness of those data-retrieval tools and knowledge of how to use them would help us during the information seeking process. This article is the first part of a series that introduces and explains the function and features of several Web-based applications that focus on health data. Our first tool to be discussed in this series is CDC WONDER.
CDC WONDER provides a single point of access to a variety of CDC reports, guidelines, and numeric public health data. This free application provides query access to about 40 text-based and numeric databases. Users can request data for any disease and demographic group by submitting ad hoc queries against available datasets. CDC WONDER also provides free-text search facilities and document retrieval from several bibliographic databases. Here is an example of how to use it:

How many under one-year-old babies died of homicide in the U.S. in 1999?
1.Go to CDC WONDER,
at http://wonder.cdc.gov/, select
Anonymous User > Get Info > Mortality.
2. Select Mortality for 1999 - 1999 with ICD 10 codes.
3. In Select Area, Population and Year, select the following:
