NetLibrary : a collection of e-books

by Arta Dobbs, MSLS
Collection Management Librarian

NetLibrary is one of the many cooperative ventures that the UCHC library engages in with the Homer Babbidge Library at UCONN’s main campus at Storrs. Specifically, NetLibrary is a collection of electronic books that may be accessed by all members of the UCONN community. The collection consists of 4,478 titles in all subject categories, including approximately 300 titles in medicine. Users may use the search tool at NetLibrary to find e-books of interest.

You will be asked to establish an “account” with NetLibrary, and you may set a username and password of your own choosing. This free account will allow you to create you own” eBookshelf”, save titles in a “My Favorites “list for easy access in the future, create a “Bookmarks” file that allow you to jump to bookmarked pages instantly from your list, and allows you to link to the “Notes” page for instant access to your annotations.

Books may be checked out for 4 hours at a time. Should the title you are looking for be checked out already, you may request e-mail notification and be alerted when the book becomes available for you to check out. When reading an eBook online you may print or copy one page at a time by using your browser's Print or Copy functions. Although you can print parts of an eBook, printing an entire eBook violates copyright laws. netLibrary takes precautions to protect copyright laws; if a suspicious usage pattern indicative of excessive printing or copying is detected, netLibrary logs the activity and sends the user a copyright warning.

Selected medical titles have also been added to the UCHC online catalog. These titles may be browsed by setting the search box to “Call Number” and then searching NETLIBRARY.

Here are some selected titles that may be of interest to you:

1. Alcohol in health and disease / edited by Dharam P. Agarwal,
Helmut K. Seitz.

2. Cytomegalovirus protocols / edited by John Sinclair.

3. Disease mapping and risk assessment for public health / edited by Andrew Lawson

4. Galen on anatomical procedures; de Anatomicis administrationibus / translation of the surviving books with introduction and notes by Charles Singer.

5. Maternal-fetal toxicology a clinician's guide / edited by Gideon Koren.

6. Medical management of thyroid disease / edited by David S. Cooper.

7. Pediatric asthma / edited by Shirley J. Murphy
