Two New Databases Working Hard for Us
by Hongjie Wang, MLS
Head, Information and Education Services Dept.

The library has added InfoRetriever and UpToDate to our electronic resources. They are available from http://library.uchc.edu. Both databases can be found either under "What's New" or from the "Databases" link on the page.

InfoRetriever is a collection of filtered-evidence and reference material including the POEMs database, Cochrane abstracts, 5-Minute Clinical Consult, many evidence-derived decision rules and predictive calculators, and various published clinical guidelines from professional associations, government agencies, and major Universities. InfoRetriever is delivered via Internet and PDA (PocketPC; PALM - "rules & tools" now, full application in January 2002).

UpToDate is a unique clinical reference that gives current answers to patient care, diagnosis and treatment questions in seconds at the point-of-care. The original text is written by over 3,000 authors who are practicing clinicians and leading experts in their specialties. Content is a synthesis of evidence-based findings, the physician’s clinical expertise and current academic thought. Manuscripts are peer reviewed and the database in-house staff of physician editors incorporate significant clinical findings from more than 270 journals which they review each month. Inclusion of specific recommendations for diagnosis and treatment make UpToDate unique among clinical information databases.
