New Circulating Laptops by Jacqueline Lewis, MLS Head of Access Services

The UCHC Library has purchased four new laptop computers, stored at the Circulation Desk, for use in the networked study carrels or via the wireless network in the library. They are Gateway 600PCs running Windows XP and Office XP. They have a floppy drive and a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive. They have Netscape and IE installed. Although the laptops have modems, the library carrels are not wired for phone access. Use of the laptops is on a self-service basis, however, printed instructions are provided to help you operate the laptop. Any eligible borrower, with a valid barcoded ID or library card is permitted to check out a laptop for in library use. Any UCHC faculty, staff or student, with a valid ID and valid barcode, can check the laptop out for 24 hours, in library or out of library use. A “Laptop Borrower’s Agreement” must be signed at the time of checkout. There will be charges assessed for missing parts or damage.
