COLLECTIONS from Major Medical Journals

by Kathleen Crea, MLS, 6th Year, AHIP
Information & Education Services Librarian

A few major medical journals now offer online “Collections” of clinical and non-clinical subjects from their online archives. This represents a new trend in information delivery, and we expect more journals to start offering these “specialty snapshots” of recent articles.

Following is a short list of medical journals that UCHC subscribes to which have compiled “Collections”. But remember... these links refer only to the individual journal contents (it is not a MEDLINE search).

1. British Medical Journal (BMJ) - Collections of BMJ Resources by Specialty & Topic - http://bmj.com/collections/

2. New England Journal of Medicine - Collections by Disease or Topic - http://content.nejm.org/collections/

*Use one of the 3 assigned terminals in the Library Reference area to access NEJM online or use your proxy account to access full-text for NEJM. Note that some items - such as editorials -originally published in the paper issue of NEJM aren’t available online (at all).

3.
JAMA & Archives Journals Collections - JAMA & Archives Collections index content from January 1998 to the current issue
http://pubs.ama-assn.org/collections/

*Go through the proxy to get to the full content of JAMA, which allows 3 UCHC users to log-on at
a time.

4. Journal of Family Practice - There are several interesting ways to access JFP’s collections.

JFP’s POEMS (Patient-Oriented Evidence that Matters)
Click on “POEM Archives” to see the entire collection from 1999-2003 at http://www.jfponline.com/display_archives.asp?YEAR=POEMs

Journal of Family Practice - Click“Hot Topics” to view their Subject Collections incorporating
back-issues of the journal, indexed starting with 1999+
http://www.jfponline.com/hot_topics.asp

Evidence-Based Practice Online - a part of Journal of Family Practice searchable by year and by subject index
http://www.ebponline.net/

*Getting to the full-text from the JFP website requires you to first open Internet Explorer then connect through the Proxy server - even when you are on campus. After you have connected through the proxy and found articles you wish to view or print, click on the Gray Bar called “Institutional Access” to display the full content.
