Looking for material the UCHC Library doesn’t own? Find it in Worldcat. by Lorna Wright, MLS Head, Technical Services Department

Need a book or journal the library does not own? There is a database you can search to find which library in the area, or in the US, owns a specific title. WorldCat contains the merged catalogs of libraries around the world, making it the world's largest and richest database of bibliographic information. WorldCat houses over 49 million bibliographic records, with each record listing libraries that hold the item.

To access Worldcat, go to the library homepage and click on WorldCat under Library Catalog. If you don’t have a UCHC IP address on your computer, use the proxy service http://library.uchc.edu/proxy/ . You could also bookmark WorldCat at http://firstsearch.oclc.org/dbname=WorldCat;autho=100267525;FSIP

Here are three samples of searches you can do in WorldCat:

Perhaps you’ve read a review in JAMA and might like to read the book, Science and Pseudoscience in Clinical Psychology (reviewed in JAMA July 2, 2003, p. 269). Search the title in WorldCat.

Now click on the “Libraries Worldwide: 146” and you’ll see Connecticut libraries listed first.

Here’s another example where you may have read about this book and wonder how to see a copy. Hunting the 1918 Flu, One Scientist’s Search for a Killer Virus by Kirsty Duncan. Notice the line which says Univ of Conn Health Center! We own this book.

If you click on See more details for locating this item, you will be able to transfer this search to our catalog and find the location and status of the book. Click on the library icon at the end of the title.

Maybe you’re looking for a journal. You have this citation from Learning Disability Quarterly: Prevalence and expression of depressive symptomatology in students with and without learning disabilities. Nancy Lee Heath. Wntr 2000 v23 p24. UCHC library does not own the title.

Choose the first title held in 701 libraries. You’ll find many local sources for reading the article.
