HONORING THE MEDICINE: The Essential Guide to Native American Healing. Kenneth "Bear Hawk" Cohen, author. New York : Ballantine Books, c2003.
WB 890 C677h 2003

Native American medicine is more about healing than curing; it is a philosophy and a lifestyle, whose goal is both wellness and wisdom. Traditional medicine aims to make the disease go away; Native American healers aim to "make whole", to restore well-being and harmony. This book explores the science and values, the ceremonies and sacred powers, the principles and practices, of America's original holistic medicine.

THE BIOLOGY OF DEATH: Origins of mortality. Andre Klarsfeld, Frederic Revah, authors. Ithaca, NY : Cornell University Press, c2004. QH 530 K63b 2004

Why do we die? Is the deterioration of the body with age unavoidable? Can the secrets of longevity be discovered? Is death inevitable? Two neurobiologists attempt to answer these questions with their research based on the workings of genes and cells. They challenge some popular assumptions and describe current experimental approaches to postponing natural death in lower organisms and in mammals.

THE STORED TISSUE ISSUE: Biomedical Research, Ethics, and Law in the Era of Genomic Medicine. Robert F. Weir, Robert S. Olick, authors. New York: Oxford University Press, c2004. WO 665 W445 2004

Genetics research has undergone a transition from practices which were once accepted without question to those which are now causing international controversy. This book critiques research practices related to banked human tissue samples, DNA, and genetic data. It analyzes regulatory policies which limit the informed choices of patients and research subjects, offers recommendations for their improvement, and covers ethical, professional and legal implications of genomic medicine

FLESH IN THE AGE OF REASON: The Modern Foundations of Body and Soul. Roy Porter, author. New York: W.W. Norton, c2004. WZ 70 FA1 P698 2004

Examines how ideas about medicine evolved during the period of the Enlightenment, and how a theocentric view of man as being made in God's image was replaced by the notion of the self-made man. This new view of the body, as the center of attention, though commonplace today, would have been viewed as satanic in the Puritan era. This book traces the evolution of body and soul, and places it within the context of the history of medicine, medical sociology, English literature and philosophy.

MARK TWAIN AND MEDICINE: "Any Mummery Will Cure". K. Patrick Ober, author. Columbia: University of Missouri Press, c2003. WZ 330 O118 2003

Mark Twain's works, rich in medical imagery and themes, provide a unique commentary on American medicine during the 19th and early-20th centuries. His acerbic observations on health, illness, and physicians, served to document the practice of medicine during this historical period. HIs own late life experimentation with alternative therapies led him to conclusions which are still accurate and relevant, as well as amusing, today. Written by a medical educator, this work reveals the prominent role medicine played in Twain's life and work.

PHYSICIAN'S GUIDE TO TERRORIST ATTACK. Michael J. Roy, editor. Totowa, NJ : Humana Press, c2004. WX 185 P578 2004

Written by medical experts who have responded to past terrorist incidents, this book reviews the major agents of attack and the appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic methods for dealing with victims. It includes an agent by agent survey of bacteriological and chemical weapons, as well as blast injuries, nuclear and radiological injuries, hospital preparation and response, and the psychological aftermath of terrorist attacks.
