Native
American medicine is more about healing than curing; it is a philosophy
and a lifestyle, whose goal is both wellness and wisdom. Traditional medicine
aims to make the disease go away; Native American healers aim to "make
whole", to restore well-being and harmony. This book explores the
science and values, the ceremonies and sacred powers, the principles and
practices, of America's original holistic medicine.
Why
do we die? Is the deterioration of the body with age unavoidable? Can
the secrets of longevity be discovered? Is death inevitable? Two neurobiologists
attempt to answer these questions with their research based on the workings
of genes and cells. They challenge some popular assumptions and describe
current experimental approaches to postponing natural death in lower organisms
and in mammals.
Genetics
research has undergone a transition from practices which were once accepted
without question to those which are now causing international controversy.
This book critiques research practices related to banked human tissue
samples, DNA, and genetic data. It analyzes regulatory policies which
limit the informed choices of patients and research subjects, offers recommendations
for their improvement, and covers ethical, professional and legal implications
of genomic medicine
